Within days of the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January of 2010, AARP members and the AARP Foundation raised $1.5 million to support older Haitians who were affected, whom the United Nations declared the most vulnerable victims. Four years later, Soledad O’Brien, along with members of the Executive Leadership of AARP and the AARP Foundation revisited Haiti to review the progress of that support. Through their partnership with HelpAge USA, AARP reached thousands of vulnerable older people whose lives depended on receiving humanitarian aid. “Through our relationship with HelpAge USA, the only global relief agency to focus on the needs of older people, we have supported 84,000 Haitians 60 and older,” says AARP CEO Barry Rand.
